How Ethernet Connectors Are Evolving to Meet New Demands

September 7, 2016 No comments Article

Ethernet connectors use Ethernet technology to connect to local area networks (LAN). It is a part of computer networking technologies commonly used in local area networks. Most computers and laptops have Ethernet connections built into the motherboard. Ethernet connector looks more like a telephone jack, but it is suitable for connecting to local area network connections only.

Currently the Ethernet connector market has seen a rapid change as more manufacturers are using this technology. This change started about 5 years ago and it is still changing. Companies are using Ethernet and replacing networks such as CANopen, DeviceNet, PROFIBUS, Foundation Fieldbus, and AS-interface. It is growing at the rate of 9.5%. Initially it was used in office environments. After a while companies started using it for industrial purposes as it ensures faster data transfer speed. Moving to Ethernet was easy as many companies had the necessary trained staff.

Mostly, it is recommended to use M12 for industrial Eethernet. But more companies are using RJ45 (8P8C connector). These connectors are extremely popular because of their universal connectivity, ease of use and ability to connect and disconnect easily.

Despite RJ45 connector’s popularity and frequent use, companies started demanding better alternatives, as the plastic ends of RJ45 connectors and the overall design was not suitable for industrial environments. That’s how M12 connectors came into the picture. These are available in 4-pin D-Code, 8-pin A-Code or 8-pin X-Code. It is possible to get a data speed upto 10 Gbps.

Since Ethernet connectors are in demand because of their rapid use in industrial settings, more research and development is being done to customize connectors with Ethernet. The next breakthrough in this domain would be category 8 cable. It is anticipated to reach the data speed of 40 Gbps.

Ethernet connectors’ market is witnessing ever changing technical breakthroughs. It is expected to provide more flexibility and higher speed in the near future.
